For too long, sports have been labeled as a “man’s world.” From coaching and scouting to broadcasting and front-office roles, women have often been told, directly and indirectly, that certain jobs just aren’t for them. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. The truth is: there is no such thing as a man’s job in sports.
Today, women are thriving in every corner of the industry. We’re seeing women take the field as umpires, lead departments as professional scouts, shape narratives as sports journalists, and analyze plays as commentators and hosts. Wherever your passion lies, there’s a place for you. The opportunities are endless—it’s just about knowing where and when you want to make your mark.
Last week, I had the opportunity to speak with Avery Griggs, a Professional Scouting Coordinator for the Colorado Rockies. Avery exemplifies how women can excel in any role in sports when they set their minds to it.
When I decided to pursue a career in sports, I wasn't fully aware of all the available job options. I started by networking on LinkedIn and exploring #womenworkinginsports on social media. I became passionate about creating content in professional sports. During my job search, I maintained an open heart and mind while thinking that reachable options for women in sports were limited. I soon realized that there are plenty of women working in departments that are historically dominated be men, like Avery.
Jobs in Sports: How to Find Them
The biggest problem I ran into during my job search is that I didn't know where to find the jobs I was looking for. I didn't have a specific team or department in mind, and LinkedIn made it too easy to overlook openings. That's when I found Teamwork Online, the #1 hiring platform and network for sports and entertainment. If you're an aspiring #womaninsports, this website is a wonderful place to start. You'll find opportunities to dive into positions that will propel you towards your goals. Teamwork Online is where I found my current role with the Colorado Rockies in Community Affairs. I didn't fully understand what community affairs was, and quite frankly I was scared that it wouldn't be for me. However, I love my job now and have gained incredible experiences that will help me in the future. Don't let a job title scare you.
The sports industry is evolving, and women are a huge part of that change. Whether you dream of being behind the camera, calling the shots from the sidelines, or managing a front office, your path is valid.
So, forget the labels. Forget the limits. There’s no such thing as a “man’s job” in sports, only your dream job.
